What is IYGU?
IYGU – International Year of Global Understanding (2016) – is an initiative of the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena (Germany) and the International Geographical Union (IGU). The international year is supported by the international scientific umbrella organisations ICSU (International Council for Science), ISSC (International Social Science Council), and CIPSH (International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences).
The International Year of Global Understanding draws attention to the global consequences of our everyday decisions and actions at the local level. The main aim of the IYGU is to promote a better understanding of the connections between the global and the local as well as the understanding of how the local contributes to the global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, migration, etc. The IYGU seeks to promote research, education, and awareness for a more sustainable lifestyle, combining the scientific knowledge and best practice examples from around the world.
What is RAC Ljubljana?
In January 2016, The Department of Geography (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana) joined the International Year of Global Understanding initiative by signing a Memorandum of Understanding for setting up an IYGU Regional Center for Slovenia (RAC Ljubljana). In 2016 and 2017, the Department of Geography is hosting Regional Action Center in order to coordinate the IYGU activities in Slovenia and to cooperate with other centers around the world.
In cooperation with partners, RAC Ljubljana intends to publish good practice examples from Slovenia and news about domestic as well as international IYGU events.
