Key medieval and post-medieval archaeological research in Europe is presented with special attention to the territories of the former Holy Roman Empire. Underlying concepts, methodology, periodization. History of the discipline in Europe and especially in Slovenia. Key findings about the material civilization of Europe between the 12th and the 19th centuries: the bases of typo-chronology of artefacts, as well as technology and innovation, crucial economic activities, traffic and trade, mobility, religious beliefs and practices, mortuary practices and rituals. Social differentiation of material culture. Interpretative models and paradigms.
