Students will have an opportunity to enrich their knowledge of aspects of Japanese folk music and its place in modern Japan. The emphasis will be on the folk music from one of the musically richest regions in Japan – Gokayama. We will define Gokayama's treasure trove of folk music and folk performing arts, on the basis of the first scientific studies on the field of folk music. We will also focus on today's state of folk songs and forms with which the folk material is preserved or transmitted to the next generations.
We will also look at Japanese popular music from the same period.
