Russian Classical Literature - Russian Realism

The course is a further historical overview of the evolution of the 19th century Russian literature with an emphasis on the development of Russian realism.
It offers an insight into the literary evolution and the development of the literary genre system from the 1830s and early 1840s (Pushkin's, Lermontov's and Gogol's work in this period and the phenomenon of the “natural school”), as well as an overview of the early works of the authors which later dominate the Russian prose in the 1860s (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy). In addition to the analysis of the evolution of Russian realistic prose the course sheds some light on other areas of literature of that period (Nekrasov's poetry and Ostrovsky's plays), but it's main focus is the presentation of the great Russian novel of the 1860s-1870s (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Turgenev) also including the insight into poetics and typology of the Russian novel.
